Lesson Overview
Students embark on a space mission where they count stars, planets, and astronauts using skip-counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Visual patterns, movement, and manipulatives make abstract number sense concrete and engaging — aligned to CCSS K.CC and 1.NBT.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Count objects up to 100 by ones, twos, fives, and tens
- Recognize and extend skip-counting patterns on a number line
- Group objects into sets of 2, 5, or 10 to count efficiently
- Represent a quantity using number bonds or tally marks
Lesson Phases (5E Model)
- 1Tell students: 'You're going on a space mission! First, the crew needs to board the rocket — let's count off by 2s!'
- 2Students stand up and count off by 2s — sit down when they hit a multiple of 10
- 3Ask: 'Did you notice a pattern? What numbers did we land on?'
- 4Introduce the mission: 'We need to count stars, planets, and astronauts — but there are SO many!'
