Research collection requires a study protocol and current consent. Research exports use protocol-scoped pseudonyms and only approved, minimum-necessary fields. Operational analytics are not silently converted into research data.

Important distinction
There are two separate types of data use on the WSEF platform: product analytics (aggregate, anonymized, always-on — used to improve the platform) and research data collection (opt-in, per-study, requires a separate consent process). This section covers research uses only.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), 20 U.S.C. §1232g, grants parents and eligible students important rights with respect to students' education records. When the Wilkinson STEM Education Foundation platform is adopted by a school or district as an educational tool, student records generated on our platform may constitute "education records" under FERPA.
Parents (or eligible students aged 18+) have the right to inspect and review education records maintained by the school within 45 days of a request. To inspect platform records, contact your school's administrator, who may request records from us at privacy@wilkinsonstem.org.
If you believe records are inaccurate or misleading, you may request corrections through your school. If the school declines to amend the records, you have the right to request a formal hearing. Direct correction requests to privacy@wilkinsonstem.org.
FERPA generally requires written consent before education records are disclosed to third parties, including researchers. We obtain this consent directly from parents/guardians (or eligible students) before enrolling a student in any research protocol — unless a qualified research exception applies under 34 CFR §99.31(a)(6), which requires a signed Data Use Agreement with the institution.
Platform records that may be education records include: learning activity completions and scores, grade-level and school enrollment information, session progress data, and any direct communications submitted through the platform related to academic performance.
If you believe your FERPA rights have been violated, you may file a complaint with the Family Policy Compliance Office (FPCO) at the U.S. Department of Education within 180 days of the alleged violation.
